Tihar: Nepal's Festival of Lights and Togetherness

Tihar, also called the Festival of Lights, is one of the most loved and vibrant festivals in Nepal. Over five days, we celebrate by honoring animals like crows, dogs, and cows, each with its own day and significance. One of the most special parts of Tihar is when we worship Goddess Laxmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, filling our homes with lights, colorful rangoli, and the hope for a brighter future.

This year, we kept the tradition going by celebrating Tihar at home, surrounded by family. For Bhai Tika, my elder sister put tika on my forehead, blessing me with long life and prosperity in our family’s traditional way. It was a moment filled with warmth and love, especially because we got to share gifts and some amazing homemade treats. I’ve even included some of my favorite photos from this and last year’s Bhai Tika celebration.

I hope you had an amazing festive season, too, gathering with family and enjoying all the delicious foods that make Tihar so special. There’s just something magical about this festival that brings us closer, lighting up not only our homes but also our hearts. Here’s to many more years of celebrating Tihar together with the same spirit of love, light, and togetherness.
